Portable electronic level Talyvel 4 is Rank Taylor Hobson's first totally portable computerized level, flatness, and straightness system. The small compact unit is highly stable and can be used not only to measure straightness, flatness, and absolute level but also as a comparator to detect departures from a preset attitude. Improvements compared with previous Talyvels include an RS232 and analogue output built-in as standard, storage for two level units, a fine -+10 arc second range on the analogue meter, and fully rechargeable batteries with built-in charger all in the Talyvel 4 display unit. The instrument offers an accuracy of 0.2 arc seconds over the center portion of its measurement range. Talyvel 4's smaller level unit can be positioned remotely from the meter unit, enabling readings to be taken in difficult locations. Results are displayed in digital LCD form on the unit, and Talyvel 4 can be interfaced to a suitable printer for hard copy printout or linked to a microcomputer for significantly enhanced system capability. Automatic 3-dimensional part profiling system Zygo is introducing a compact, three-dimensional, part profiling system. This new table-top product--3D Part Profiler--is a noncontact part profiling system. Zygo states that the instrument automatically performs dimensional measurements, including length, diameter, taper, angles, straightness, circularity, runout (TIR), cylindricity, eccentricity, radius of curvature, recess, and groove depth. The 3D Part Profiler measures parts up to 2 inches (50 mm) in diameter and 24 inches (600 mm) long. A high resolution stepper motor controls part translation and rotation with real-time translation servo-feedback from a linear optical scale. Diameter measurement repeatability is better than +40 millionths of an inch (1 micron), and length repeatability is better than -+0.0002 inch (5 microns). According to Zygo, only a few simple steps are required to operate the 3D Part Profiler. First, the part is loaded into the 3-point chuck or center feature. Second, the system instantly displays a graphic part profile and its dimensions in the automatic acquisition mode. Third, the operator identifies the dimensions of interest, along with part tolerances. Then the operator simply presses the "start measurement" key. The preselected dimensions are automatically measured and appear on the high-resolution monitor in either "in" or "'out-of-tolerance'" color codes. Each diameter-related measurement takes 1.5 seconds, while length-related measurements take 5 seconds. The new 3D Part Profiler is capable of measuring aerospace parts, aircraft engine parts, automotive steering gears, automotive transmission parts, electrical components, electric motor shafts, drums~rollers~shafts, and spark plugs. Any application requiring precise dimensional measurements being held by a 3-point chuck, lathe centers, female centers, or rollers can benefit by using the 3D Part Profiler. Linear motion design with new interchangeable rail guides With a new series of modular rail guides, SKF claims to have simplified

the design of linear motion systems. While offering four different types of bearing elements, all rail guides can now have identical cross-section dimensions. This provides full interchangeability between all units and allows system performance to be readily upgraded by just changing the bearing mechanism. SKF rail guides are available with crossed roller, ball, needle V, or plastic-coated bearing arrangements for a variety of different linear motion applications. New and standardized designs for rails, cage, and rolling element assemblies have enabled a single and common cross-section rail guide set to be used regardless of the bearing type specified. The range starts with the commonly used LWR rail guide crosssection that can be fitted with either a ball or roller cage assembly. Cage assemblies are of an advanced design that features precision-moulded polymer pockets to retain the rolling elements. Stiffness and load carrying capacity are increased with the new LWRE rail guides. These features improve internal geometry and an adjustable-style of cage that gives up to five times the load-carrying capacity and double the stiffness. The use of larger diameter rollers and symmetrical load distribution provide benefits in terms of smooth running, making these units ideal for machine tool and measuring equipment applications. Even higher stiffness and load capabilities can be achieved by upgrading to the new LWRM/LWRV needle V guides. These units also feature polymer cages that avoid problems of rail orientation and optimize performance. As such, needle roller guides represent the ultimate linear motion solution in terms of load-carrying capacity and stiffness using rolling element technology.
