structure on the atomic scale, and a chapter on this technique is included.

Book Review Carbon Black 2nd Edition “Carbon Btack” was first published in 1976. This revised edition, edited by JeanBaptiste Dounet, comprises chapters written by individual authors on carbon black manufacture, the mechanism of its formation, its microstructure, morphology, physical and other properties, the chemica1 structure of carbon black surface, its fractal geometry, and the role of carbon black in elastomers, plastics and xerographic toners. There are separate chapters on surface energy, conductivity, and health hazards. The role of carbon black in elastomers is discussed in three different chapters. One chapter is devoted to the influence of carbon black properties on its applications in plastics to obtain compounds with excellent UV protection and antistatic shielding characteristics. Scanning tunnelling microscopy has enabled scientists to have a look at carbon black

Such is the current diversity of literature on carbon black, that many of the theories and concepts presented in the first edition have been reviewed only briefly, and more emphasis has been focused on the recent investigations. The book contains an extensive author/subject index, and forms on extremely valuable source of reference and textbook for scientists and technologists working in research centres and also in industry.
