Filtration Industry Analyst

New Product Developments UÊ FLSmidth A/S and catalysis specialist Haldor Topsoe A/S are to jointly commercialize a newly developed catalytic filter bag technology. The EnviroTex catalytic filter bag is capable of removing dust, volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides in one integrated and cost-effective process. The patentpending catalytic filter bag has three layers of filter fabric. Each layer contains a tailored catalyst optimized for the removal of specific kinds of compounds from the off-gas that passes through it. Target industries include cement, power, biomass, waste incineration as well as glass and metal production. The two companies have been working together over the last four years to develop the EnviroTex technology. “By combining FLSmidth’s expertise in filtration in industrial processes with Topsoe’s leadership in catalysis, we have created a unique product that will allow customers to meet increasingly stringent environmental legislation at a fraction of the operating cost that even the best available technologies offer today,” said Bjerne Clausen, CEO of Haldor Topsoe. The new product will be manufactured at FLSmidth’s bag production facilities in Georgia, USA. The filter bags will then be catalyzed and assembled at Topsoe’s catalyst production facility in Houston, Texas. A new production line for the EnviroTex catalytic filter bags will be added to the Houston site by the end of 2015. and UÊ Weir Minerals has launched two new versions of its heavy-duty CAVEX hydrocyclones in the European market. The new CAVEX CVXU polyurethane hydrocyclone and CAVEX CVXT ceramic tile-lined hydrocyclone are designed to withstand severe abrasion. The unique shape of the CAVEX hydrocyclone features a laminar spiral inlet geometry that allows the slurry to follow a natural path without encountering any sharp edges. This reduces turbulence inside the cyclone which helps maximise separation efficiency, hydraulic capacity and extend wear life, while minimising localised wear on the feed chamber and vortex finder. Ceramic tilelined CAVEX CVXT hydrocyclones are also available to order.

UÊ /…iÊ >ÌÕÀ>Ê -Vˆi˜ViÃÊ >˜`Ê ˜}ˆ˜iiÀˆ˜}Ê Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has awarded a C$25 000 Engage Grant to Dr Lynn McMullen at the University of Alberta’s Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Sciences to initiate research with BioLargo Water Inc into the company’s AOS Filter technology and its electrochemical inactivation of pathogens. The research will provide data that can be translated to further applications in the food and agricultural industries. and www. UÊ OriginOil Inc, the developer of Electro Water Separation (EWS), has commissioned a pilot site for the treatment of produced water for steam injection, and to provide agricultural irrigation water. The site is hosted by Vaquero Energy, an exploration and production company based in Bakersfield, California. EWS is a high-speed, chemical-free process to clean up large quantities of water. For on-site applications, EWS is typically combined with downstream processes into the complete solution, CLEANFRAC. These processes include TriSep Corp’s iSep ultrafiltration (UF) membrane system. An iSep unit is now operating at the Vaquero site to help demonstrate CLEAN-FRAC’s end-to-end capability. “After our field testing in the natural gas fields of Colorado and the light oil reservoirs of West Texas, it is critical from a technical perspective to have a test site in the heavy oil fields of Central California,” said Lee Portillo, OriginOil vice president of engineering for Oil & Gas. “We were delighted to welcome OriginOil on our site, because we’ve prioritized treating our produced water for beneficial reuse in our Cyclic Steam boilers and for agricultural irrigation,” said Wyatt Shipley, Vaquero Energy operations manager. “OriginOil’s units are treating our produced water, while also recovering significant amounts of oil, which otherwise would have been lost to disposal. We are excited about the potential for this new technology to work in the field.” OriginOil has placed two units at Vaquero. The first is a P250 model, which can treat 250 barrels per day (bpd). The second is the commercialscale P3000, designed to treat 3000 bpd.
