BOOK REVIEWS Luw and Medim Ethics by J.K. Mason et R.A. McCall Smith, Rutterworths, London, 1983, pp. 2’75. Hard cover: g13.50; Soft cover: $8.95 He did it again! Professor J.K. Mason, who has taken over the famous Regius Chair of Forensic Medicine in Edinburgh, has renewed its reputation by writing excellent books on his subject, a successful book on traumatic pathology and Y comprehensive text book in forensic medicine for lawyers, He has now - together with a competent lawyer - published a thorough account of the many important ethical problems, which a doctor meets to-day. The two authors show that there is an intimate connection between the law and ethics - e,thical behaviour is firmly bound to the laws of a country. They give a broad description of the problems, but also give their presonal opinion and point out in which. way many of the problems could be solved according to their points of view. The exposition is illustrated by citation of a large number of English and American court decisions. In 18 chapters they cover all the important aspects of their subject from the evolution of medical ethics vb reproductive medicine, medical practice and research and experimentation to the relation between psychiatry and the law. As addenda we can read the Hippocratic Oath and the Declarations of Geneva (Sydney), Tokyo, Oslo and Helsinki and the International Code of Medical Ethics. The various opinions in the book will presumably excite discussion, the presentation is always thought-provoking and stimulates us to make up our own minds. It is positive that a teacher in forensic medicine gives us this book - it stresses that medical ethics, if it should be taught systematically, is closely related to medical jurisprudence. The book is a “must” for every teacher in forensic medicine, but I dare say, that every doctor in duty should really have read it before practising. The price is reasonable - I should prefer the hard-cover edition - the soft cover will be worn out much too fast. J#rgen Voigt Copenhagen
