A n n e w a s w o r k i n g in t h e e m e r g e n c y d e p a r t m e n t at M i s s i o n H o s p i t a l Regional M e d i c a l Center, M i s s i o n Viejo, California, c a r i n g for a little boy, w h e n s h e s u d d e n l y c o l l a p s e d from a p r e v i o u s l y undiagnosed cerebral aneurysm. Through tears and w i t h a h e a v y heart, her ED c o w o r k e r s a n d ICU coll e a g u e s w o r k e d to b r i n g b a c k t h e A n n e w e all k n e w a n d loved, b u t w i t h o u t s u c c e s s . Her d e a t h h a d a deva s t a t i n g effect on e v e r y o n e s h e k n e w a n d e s p e c i a l l y on t h o s e w h o h e l p e d c a r e for her, for w h e n it is one of your own, t h e effects are profound. H o w do you w r i t e a b o u t t h e loss of a d e a r a n d b e l o v e d friend w h o b r o u g h t m e a n i n g a n d love to your o w n life? You r e m e m b e r t h e joys in your life together, t h e t h i n g s y o u s h a r e d , a n d t h e u n i q u e n e s s e a c h of you b r o u g h t to t h e friendship. A n n e w a s s u c h a friend, b u t I w a s not alone, for A n n e s h a r e d her brief life not only w i t h m e b u t w i t h a m u l t i t u d e of others, too n u m e r o u s to count. A n n e w a s a n a t i v e Californian b u t r e c e i v e d her BSN d e g r e e from M i c h i g a n S t a t e University. She t h e n e n l i s t e d in t h e A r m y N u r s e Corps a n d w i t h t h e r a n k of c a p t a i n , s u p e r v i s e d e m e r g e n c y d e p a r t m e n t s a n d critical c a r e u n i t s in s e v e r a l A r m y h o s p i t a l s t h r o u g h o u t t h e U n i t e d States. After c o m p l e t i o n of her a c t i v e d u t y a s s i g n m e n t s , A n n e r e t u r n e d to California a n d s e t t l e d in O r a n g e County. At the same time she completed her master's degree at P e p p e r d i n e University. A n n e t h e n b e c a m e t h e ED clinical educator at Mission Hospital Regional M e d i c a l Center. In e a c h of her p o s i t i o n s s h e w a s not only a n e x c e p t i o n a l n u r s e b u t also a mentor, friend, role model, a n d c o n f i d a n t to her p h y s i c i a n , nursing, a n d p a r a m e d i c a l colleagues. A n n e w a s in t h a t pion e e r i n g g r o u p of e m e r g e n c y n u r s e s who, in July 1980, s u c c e s s f u l l y s a t for t h e first CEN e x a m i n a t i o n , a n d h a d b e e n a c t i v e l y involved w i t h E N A at t h e local level, holding t h e office of treasurer. With A n n e , t h e r e w a s a g r e a t e r spirit for life. She w a s a wife to Bill, w h o is a d i v i s i o n chief w i t h the O r a n g e C o u n t y Fire Authority. She w a s t h e m o t h e r of M e g a n , a g e 11, a n d Melissa, a g e 8. It w a s b e c a u s e of her d e v o t i o n to her family a n d t h e d e s i r e to s p e n d as much time as possible with them that she rearranged h e r career, r e s i g n i n g her p o s i t i o n a s ED clinical e d u c a t o r a n d r e t u r n e d to her first l o v e - - c l i n i c a l e m e r g e n c y nursing. This allowed her t i m e to volunteer in M e g a n a n d M e l i s s a ' s classrooms, b e involved as a August 1996 365

T h e w o r d "can't" w a s n o t p a r t of A n n e ' s vocabulary. She w a s a true g i v e r of herself. A n n e h a d t h e s p e c i a l k n a c k of m a k i n g e a c h a n d e v e r y p e r s o n w h o c a m e into h e r life feel as t h o u g h h e or s h e w a s t h e m o s t i m p o r t a n t p e r s o n in t h e world. T h a t i n c l u d e d n o t only h e r friends a n d colleagues, b u t also t h e p a t i e n t s in her care. A n n e ' s love, caring, a n d l a u g h t e r w e r e e v i d e n t to e v e r y o n e in t h e overflowing c r o w d p r e s e n t at t h e m e m o r i a l s e r v i c e for her. To s a y g o o d - b y e to a d e a r a n d c h e r i s h e d friend is sorrowful, b e c a u s e f r i e n d s h i p a n d love are "like a t r e e w h o s e roots a r e d e e p in t h e earth, b u t w h o s e b r a n c h e s e x t e n d into h e a v e n " (Bertrand Russell). A n n e ' s roots w e r e d e e p , b u t her i n f l u e n c e a n d love t o u c h e d t h e s t a r s of h e a v e n .
