Molecular Immunology 44 (2007) 1
XXI International Complement Workshop, Beijing, China, October 22–26, 2006
We are proud to introduce to you this special issue of Molecular Immunology featuring the abstracts from the XXI International Complement Workshop, which will be held on Oct 22–26, 2006 in Beijing, China. Since its first meeting more than 40 years ago, the International Complement Workshop (ICW) has been held about every two years, generally alternating between an American and European city. The only exception to this geographical pattern of meeting venues was the highly successful and memorable 1993 meeting in Kyoto, Japan. It is a great pleasure for us, as members of the Local Organizing Committee, to welcome our friends and colleagues to this part of the world again. This is an exciting time to be engaged in complement research. As was once said, the essence of scientific research is not so much the discovery of new knowledge as it is the discovery of new ways of looking at existing knowledge. This philosophical view is most accurate when applied to contemporary research in the complement field. Works conducted during the last decade have brought us to a new level of understanding of the structures and functions of the complement system. As evidenced by the high quality abstracts contained in this special issue, we are continuing to make major strides in elucidating the structures of complement proteins, discovering new activation pathways and functional proteins, and achieving a better appreciation of the interaction between complement and other innate immune systems and adaptive immunity.
